Policy convergence in a two-candidate probabilistic voting model

چکیده

I propose a generalization of the probabilistic voting model in two-candidate elections. Unlike in all previous works, I assume that the candidates have general von Neumann-Morgenstern utility functions defined over the voting outcomes. For a finite number of voters, I derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a local Nash equilibrium in which the policy platforms of the candidates are identical. The convergent equilibrium exists only if a certain condition on the probability of voting functions is satisfied, and/or a strict symmetry condition on the candidate utility functions is satisfied. Both widely studied special cases — probability of win-maximizers and voteshare-maximizers — satisfy the latter condition. Hence, policy coincidence will not exist in the general case, although Banks and Duggan (2005) have shown that every pure-strategy Nash equilibrium will exhibit convergence for voteshare-maximizing candidates and a broad class of probability of voting functions. ∗Central Economics and Mathematics Institute, Moscow, Russia. The equivalence between costly and probabilistic voting models

In costly voting models, voters abstain when a stochastic cost of voting exceeds the benefit from voting. In probabilistic voting models, they always vote for a candidate who generates the highest utility, which is subject to random shocks. We prove an equivalence result: In two-candidate elections, given any costly voting model, there exists a probabilistic voting model that generates winning ...

Nash equilibrium in multiparty competitionwith "stochastic" voters

Theoretical spatial models of electoral voting tend to predict either convergence to an electoral mean (when voting is probabilistic) or chaos (when voting is deterministic). Here, we construct an empirical model of voting for the Israeli Knesset in 1992 (based on a large electoral sample and on analysis of party declarations). The probabilistic voting model so estimated fits the known election...

An Effective and Optimal Fusion Rule in the Presence of Probabilistic Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification Attack

Cognitive radio (CR) network is an excellent solution to the spectrum scarcity problem. Cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) has been widely used to precisely detect of primary user (PU) signals. The trustworthiness of the CSS is vulnerable to spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack. In an SSDF attack, some malicious users intentionally report wrong sensing results to cheat the fusion c...

Essays on Political Economy

This collection of essays investigates issues related to elections and wars. In the first essay, we present an auction-type model of war and characterize its unique equilibrium. We offer three different explanations for the causes of wars. First, as an individual-level explanation of war, we show that wars occur due to information asymmetry between governments. Second, as a societal-level expla...

A two phases approach for discriminating efficient candidate by using DEA inspired procedure

There are several methods to ranking DMUs in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and candidates in voting system. This paper proposes a new two phases method based on DEA’s concepts. The first phase presents an aspiration rank for each candidate and second phase propose final ranking.
